Limbus
Synonym(s): Sclerocorneal Limbus
Definition: Annular transition zone between the transparent CORNEA, the bulbar CONJUNCTIVE and the opaque SCLEROTIC (approximately 1 mm thick).
Additional information for professionals: The limbus is richly innervated and vascularised, and plays a part in the metabolism of the cornea. It is significant from an ophthalmological point of view that the limbus appears on the external surface of the ocular GLOBE as a slight scissure marking the line between the cornea and the sclera.
