Retinal ganglion cells
Synonym(s): Cell, Retinal Ganglion - Ganglion Cell, Retina
Definition: Cells in the innermost nuclear layer of the retina, the ganglion cell layer, which project axons across the optic nerve to the brain. They are quite variable in the size and shape of their dendritic trees, which are generally confined to the inner plexiform layer. A small subset of these cells act as photoreceptors and project to the SUPRACHIASMATIC NOYAL, the location of the circadian clock, defining the CIRCADIAN RHYTHM.
